Meet Mary
Mary McCorvey’s story begins in Florida and stretches all the way to the Moon—almost. A former soldier, radio host, television producer, playwright, and Gulf War veteran, Mary’s life has been defined by reinvention, resilience, and one haunting question: What do you do…? At 17, she was implicated in a murder. At 35, she suffered seizures and cognitive decline from Gulf War Syndrome after exposure to sarin gas. Later diagnosed with terminal pulmonary fibrosis, she was told she had two years to live. She survived that—and more. After 27 years of marriage, her husband’s betrayal shattered her ideal of love. And yet, she forgave him—and herself—for the sins of their youth. She built, dreamed, and led again, even launching a plan to send students’ work to the Moon before the pandemic derailed it all. Then came the final twist: a locked box, unopened for 35 years, filled with love letters and photographs from the man she’d never forgotten. Her memoir is a raw, often funny, and deeply human account of surviving heartbreak, chasing big dreams, and finding meaning—on her own terms. Mary lives and writes in Pennsylvania, with a new adventure always on the horizon. For all the latest, subscribe to Mary’s Substack newsletter.

OpeningThe Box
For decades, I kept Rob’s letters sealed in a box—through nine moves and eleven states, I couldn’t bear to open them. Not yet. Opening The Box is now a weekly Substack newsletter where that love story, long buried, finds its voice. Each week, I lift the lid—on his words, my memories, and everything in between. Some stories break your heart. Some mend it. This space holds both. If you've ever wondered what became of the one who got away—or what happens when you finally read the letter you never answered—subscribe and join me on Substack.

My Books

Mary's Memoir
My professional background—while successful—is eclectic and almost impossible to summarize in a simple answer to the question, “What do you do?” “I was not a doctor, a lawyer, a finance whiz, an engineer, or a hair stylist,” I write in the preface to my forthcoming memoir. “I wrote, but I wasn’t a writer. I created experiences, television, and documentaries, but I wasn’t a Hollywood or New York producer. I was commissioned to write plays—one of which was beautifully produced—and I mistakenly believed that made me a playwright. I co-founded a software company, learned to write code, and even earned a patent, but I was not a software engineer.” Trying to answer that one professional question pulled me into a deeply personal one: Who am I, really? And why have I been so reluctant to tell the truth? That question became the start of this memoir. This isn’t a book about being exceptional. It’s a book about being human. About reflecting on a life filled with sharp pivots, quiet reinventions, and a few spectacular failures—including the one I lovingly refer to as my "epic crash into the Moon" in 2021. That crash led me into the darkest depression I’d ever known—and ultimately, into the deepest honesty I’ve ever lived. From that place, I’ve begun to write. Truthfully. Finally. Life is good.
